I've been watching lots of what I think is pretty damn good TV lately. Between Hell on Wheels (yeah, yeah, I know, it's slow and moody, so sue me) and Breaking Bad (yeah, this season's been over for a while, one more starting this summer) and Homeland (which I just started, I'm new at it, don't spoil me please) I've been getting my drama quotient filled.

But Battlestar Galactica is still my favorite. Every time I think wow, I get it, I get all these little nuances about the show, I understand where people have been and where they're going, I watch another episode and get a sweet little slap in the face over all the stuff I don't know yet. I get to blame (thank) the writers for creating such beautifully complex and flawed characters with so much depth of experience and personality. I have my favorites and least favorites, of course -- a discussion for another time -- but brotha. I know there's only one first time to watch or read anything, but I swear, this show holds all the tension and surprises and interest I had the first time through. Lately I've been watching the first part of Season 4 and I can finally admit: while this was probably one of my least favorite story arcs the first time around, I have grown to appreciate its complexity and multifaceted-ness so much in rewatches. I still don't like what they did with Starbuck, but at least I understand why they did it. I don't like what they did with Sam, but I marvel at how beautifully they did it. I'm still trying to figure out Athena a little bit in this arc, but slowly, the pieces are clicking into place.

And oh, but my heart goes out to Barolay. Way to go, Jean, last of the C-Bucs besides Sam, that scene in 4.06 breaks my heart. And so does Sam's reaction. And Natalie's action. And how stunned everyone is at it. To me, that episode is pretty much the unraveling of anything that makes Cylons different from humans. And they do it in these subtle little ways, from Athena barking at her fellow Eights to the business with Natalie and Barolay and the Six to Leoben's inept platitude-spouting: these guys are no better at any of it than their human counterparts, as we see from the mess on the Demetrius.

I don't know. I love how blurry the lines are. I love how this arc is every bit as much about Sam as it is about Kara's quest for answers. I love how the whole Demetrius arc basically wears everyone down until they are raw and naked and bloodied and all that's left is what and who they truly are. First impression aside, it's actually spectacular, and I hate to love it as much as I first loved to hate it.
