Y: The Last Man #55

Anyone care to discuss?
- Yorick and his damn dreams. Man, I wondered what the hell 355 was up to in her intervention outfit. I'm so glad it was just a dream. It was bad enough when 711 did it...
- The Infancy Brigade, aka Hero, Natalya, Beth|Beth, and Ciba|Vlad. Of course, I always get really excited when they're in it. Another issue of reprieve for Heroic! She ain't dead yet!
- Kind of a warm fuzzy issue... until the end. What the hell was Beth 1 thinking, flashing Yorick's picture all over the place? Do you think his dream portends that meeting up with her again really will be the death of him? Do you really think there is something wrong with her, like she's said before in Yorick's dreams? I did admire him for questioning whether the two of them would still have anything in common after all this time, and 355's remark about his choice of words was pretty priceless.
- OK. Let's take bets: who's going to kill off Alter? I vote for Hero.

Date: 2007-03-24 06:32 am (UTC)Also, 355's outfit was scary. I was all 'AUGH WHAT ARE YOU DOING?'
I just am really hoping for a happy ending. I'm sure it will be a good, yet totally unexpected ending, as per usual Vaughn. But happy? Dunno.

Date: 2007-03-24 06:46 am (UTC)I think Hero will have to live up to her name. Sadly, I think she also has to pay for her amazon past. They don't know yet that their mom is dead, and I can see that being what drives her to out and out murder.
We'll see. But now it's going bimonthly, so it's a long wait for these last five issues.

Date: 2007-03-24 07:28 am (UTC)Yorick should be having doubts about his relationship with Beth. How could he not? He and 355, who I dearly love and worried about a bit when I first saw her in that intervention outfit, both brought up good points. They've been apart longer than they dated. We don't know a whole lot about how Beth 1 truly feels about Yorick in comparison to how he feels -- and thinks he feels -- about her, but he's definitely had her up on a pedestal. She clearly had something important to tell him in that phone call on the day the plague hit, and like you said, I'm really eager to find out what that was. It was important enough that she was trying to get to that before he got too sentimental on her. Yeah, she might not be attracted to him anymore, but 355 was right: maybe he won't be attracted to her when they finally get a little time together again.
Yorick needed a goal. Without a goal -- and I'd still like to now what he saw during his intervention, by the way -- he wouldn't have made it though all he has as well as he has, despite 355's and Allison's best efforts. That said, I think he's spent way too long fixated on Beth 1. It can only be a disappointment by now. Hell, he's got even Spike beat out on the amount of time he's carried a torch. Heh.
I love Pia's art. Just sayin'.
I could see so many characters being killed off by the last comic, and I'd hate to see most of them go. I don't want Beth 2 to die (or Junior, of course, but I think Junior's a hell of a lot safer than her mother is). It's mostly selfish, of course, but on the other hand, I've never felt as worried for Beth 2 as I am for 355, Hero, or even Yorick. I just think the odds of death for those three are much higher, and I'd rather not see any of them offed.
I could easily see Beth 1 dying, too. I guess we'll find out if she really does have something wrong with her or not.
Frankly, I'm excited as hell for the big reunion.
And as you said in that comment up there, I could definitely see Hero being totally driven to killing Alter after she finds out about their mom. I hope Yorick gets to do the honors if she doesn't.
When I went back to my friends list as I was writing this, I saw that somehow I'd completely missed the three or four posts before this on my friends list, including your last entry. So even though it has nothing to do with Y, I should tell you I realize I haven't been commenting much lately. In anybody's journals. But don't think I don't ♥ you, ma'am.

Date: 2007-03-24 03:36 pm (UTC)So, do you think there will be a big reunion between not only Yorick and Beth1 and Beth2 and Hero and Ciba and Natalya and 355, but also with Rose and Allison? Think they'll all get together before the Big Bang that's inevitably going to end things? My mind boggles when I think of how many details there are to wrap up in 5 more issues, even if the last one is double-sized. Then again, it could be as simple as Yorick and Beth1 reuniting, end of story. Somehow, though, that doesn't feel like a very Vaughanesque ending to me. He did say the trouble was really beginning, although that's paraphrasing because I'm too lazy to go to his forum and look it up exactly.
Someone's got to survive, I'd think, but I could be wrong. I think the little clones will survive, both the Allison ones and the Yorick ones. Imagine a world of them as Adams and Eves: horribly nearsighted women and men with thinning hair. Yuk yuk.
But man, now that Natalya's gone and called Hero "Heroic," she's definitely doomed. I hold my breath on her every issue, and on 355. I worry less now for Allison and Rose because they're a little out of the line of fire, but Allison was on Alter's hit list before she even met up with Yorick, so no one's safe.
Beth1 is still the biggest unknown quantity to me, and what is it with these guys and their women on pedestals? The torches they carry have to be burning pretty close to the skin by now, don't they? Like I said, I was so glad to see him finally start to question this undying passionate quest he's been on. I'd say it's like he's waking up a little, but I don't want to mix canons which is only too easy to do, because everything in life comes back to Bebop eventually.
But now if you'll excuse me, the carpool for Spike will arrive in about an hour, and my hygiene points need upping before that happens. And then I will have an instant meal, change into work clothes in a spinning blur, and be on my way.

Date: 2007-03-25 08:38 pm (UTC)This makes me wish you'd watched Farscape, because I bet Yorick'd do pretty much what Crichton does - which is instant transformation into UberDaddy. There's pretty much nothing more important to Crichton than family responsibilities, and it wouldn't surprise me if it hits Yorick just as hard.

Date: 2007-03-25 05:30 pm (UTC)So I guess that even if there is going to be a lot of doom & gloom (it's Vaughan, of course there will be), it'll be worth the read because of the unpredictability factor alone.

Date: 2007-03-25 07:59 pm (UTC)I'm reminded of a movie I hold in high regard, for the cast as well as the director - Cronenberg's remake of The Fly. Thought it was fantastic, so much more moving than the original, brilliantly tragic.
Don't think I can ever steel myself to watch it again.
But I'd recommend it in a flash, with warnings. It has the unusual status of being one of only two movies which has actually managed to gross me out (one scene each).

Date: 2007-03-25 08:11 pm (UTC)My favorite movie that grosses me out every time but I can't stay away from it is Event Horizon. Not just because of Jason Isaacs, either, but the whole thing is just entirely too creepy. I knew the first time I started watching it that I'd either hate it or have to buy it.
I bought it.
