Lookit, [livejournal.com profile] sff_corgi, I'm reading your journal.

QUESTIONS:
1. My username is ____ because ____.
2. My journal is titled ____ because ____.
3. My subtitle is ____ because ____.
4. My friends page is called ____ because ____.
5. My default userpic is ____ because ____.

  1. My username is sit_good_dog because of my long-standing admiration for Sirius Black. If you didn't know that, go away and come back tomorrow. Tomorrow? I thought you said... YOU HEARD ME, TOMORROW! (End of digression)

My default name is Humble Bounty Hunter because... it's Spike's turn in the spotlight.

  2. My journal is titled Just A Dream I Can't Wake Up From because that's how I feel: it's another Spike thing. If you don't know that, go watch a few Bebop sessions and you'll figure it out. (Wow. This is starting to sound like a classroom assignment. Like my mood?)

  3. My subtitle is Bang because it fits the journal title. No rants here. Nuh-uh. If you want those, go see someone else, right, [livejournal.com profile] sff_corgi?

  4. My friends page is called Bounties because... are we sensing a theme here? Say hello to Spike.

  5. My default userpic is Spike lying down because we have the same nose and now you get to see what it looks like. In fact, we look just exactly alike. In fact, they used me for the model for him, because for heaven's sake, no one else in the world has my legs except for Spike. When I don't dry my hair, it looks like Spike's too. Phoning my lawyers about Bandai using my image without permission right about now.

In case you haven't noticed, I have a snarky little edge. Who, me? Yes.

I went to see Goblet of Fire with [livejournal.com profile] mme_publisher and our kids yesterday. After this viewing, I think I'm ready to write a review.

First and foremost, I find this to be an incredibly emotional movie. I have to give you background in case you don't know: since 2002, I've RPed in the Harry Potter world and since 2002, I've RPed Sirius Black. For every other Potter film, I've gone with people I've roleplayed with and as such, I've tended to watch the film through Sirius's eyes, if that makes sense. (If it doesn't, roleplay for a while and it will.) This time, I didn't, and if I tried I found I couldn't. It was just me, no alter-egos. No one else in my brain for the whole 2 and a half hours.

Wow.

It's also an emotional book; it's the first HP book that made me cry.

I came to it after Prisoner of Azkaban which, though one of my favorite books, is one of my least favorite movies of all times and I already reviewed that and won't do it again. Suffice it to say they left out so much and it was so miscast I just can't bring myself to even watch it again.

But Goblet is so visually rich and moves along so quickly. Yes, they left out a lot. I could start with the complaints (#1: not enough Jason Isaacs!) but all in all, in this film Kloves' screenplay did two things I approve of.

First, he didn't give all of the best lines in the book to Hermione.

Second, when they left out pieces of plot, they left out all the pieces of that plot. No Animagus!Rita, no Marauder's Map, no Snuffles in the cave, no showdown between Sirius and Snape. A lot of those things lend a huge element of richness to the book, but I can see why they left them out of the screenplay. After all, screenplays from books are adaptations, not literal retellings.

All in all, though, I liked it so very well and I think it's the best of the Potter films so far. And I have to confess that when Neville danced alone, it brought tears to my eyes. And I also got teary when Cedric died, even though I knew damn well it was going to happen. And, though I'm not always a huge Ralph Fiennes fan, it seemed pretty clear to me that he'd read the book because I thought he played Voldemort so very close to canon: he captured Voldemort's arrogance and formality and overwhelming yearning for victory. He's a snob and he believes he's invincible, and I think that's just how Fiennes played him.

And if he really has read the book, then hooray for one of the adult actors besides Jason Isaacs having actually read them.

So I give the film thumbs up. It will definitely go in my DVD library when it's out.

Word on GoF. Just...word.

Except, I have to add that I thought Hermione was a right shrewish fishwife toward Ron in this one. She snapped every time "Ronald," opened his mouth, but crooned tenderly over Harry's every move. I've always liked Emma's interpretation of Hermione, but in this one she just way over-acted, IMHO.

No wonder the H/Hr's think their ship is going to sail.

My goodness, aren't we in a frisky mood. ^_^

I'm pretty sure the Wee Brun Man has read the books with his kid, from something that was said before Harry Potter and the Miscast Movie came out. I think he's just never had a chance to even try to be a good Sirius. Insufficient appleboxes, for one [/doubleinjoke].

I found the Voldemort makeup to be surprising, in one left-field way -- after he solidified and enrobed (mmmm... silk), as soon as he opened his eyes, my brain went 'Oh, look - Ralph.' It let him look like him, even sans nose and all, without compromising the look of the character. Now that is design.

And, aha! I knew I was missing something from the movie, and yeah -- dispatching to gather the Order, that's what I couldn't remember because it was so completely divorced from the screenplay. As exciting as that was for the readers, though, I can see how that can be worked around easily in movie format.

Not sure if I'll get around to buying it, though.
