Vacation Prep

It's hard to believe that in a mere two days I'll be getting up way before the crack of dawn to get to the airport and go through the security hassle and get on a plane headed east. The older I get, the less I look forward to this disruption.
Okay, so I do it for my parents. They're in their 80s, and Thanksgiving has always been my mom's very favorite holiday. I do it for her. But as Hannah gets more and more involved in school, we start to miss more critical things by pulling her out for five or six days so we can make this trek.
So maybe this is the last Thanksgiving we do this long long long trip. Maybe next year we convince everyone to come out here. That would be nice. It would take a lot of stress off my parents.
But this year we go, and we see my parents' new home, and we stay and play and do whatever we can. And of course, give thanks for it all.
And try to squeeze out a little alone time to be online. Hell, I'm sure there's a Kinkos near them if nothing else.

Why not? Yours sounds like a nice place to live :) and yes, your parents won't have to do all that planning.

Date: 2003-11-20 09:33 pm (UTC)Second, it's the question of money (isn't it always)--it makes more economic sense for the three of us to fly there than for eight people to fly here.
It's funny; someone in my family always has to stay in an hotel over Thanksgiving because there's simply not enough room at my parents' place. I always hope it will be our turn, and I'm always told no, you guys can't stay in the hotel; you're never here and have to stay at Mom and Dad's. One of these times, I'd like to have the hotel! You see, part of my family is an ickle bit irritating to be around, and some small escape would be nice.
Then again, we usually don't go for as long as we will this time. 9 days there is a long time... but that reminds me, Ara: does Hex want a Brooklyn t-shirt? I can pick one up readily enough while I'm there. They make great conversation starters.

Date: 2003-11-20 10:02 pm (UTC)In my dad's family's case, we do tend to visit my grandparents for the holidays even though they're both fit and willing to travel. This year I heard quite a few relatives were coming to visit from Canada, the US, and maybe even Italy and Switzerland!
(On the other hand, my mom and her siblings take turns hosting the annual Christmas get-together.)
Re: the T-shirt, aw, SHUX, you don't have to do that! *hugs* Even though it may not look it because he likes to wear the same shirts over and over, Hex has more T-shirts than he knows what to do with :D

Date: 2003-11-20 10:28 pm (UTC)Oh yeah, and we have a date for December 19. I'll be calling Regal Cinemas every day until they announce the movie times so I can be sure to get advance tickets... just like last year. RotK, anyone?
