I'm working on my rabid plot bunny! I found that due to circumstances outside of my control (i.e. real history, darn it) I have to make this a 5th-year story, but that's just okay. It's going to work out fine.

And yes, Gufa, I promise I will be very very good writing James. So many people don't like him since Book Five.

I do.

People who don't like James after book five can bite me. Seriously, he was a prat, he was dumb, but he was fifteen years old. Give me a break! And at least he didn't call anyone a mudblood.

ARGH. James bashing = big pet peeve.

I promise you, [livejournal.com profile] livii, I really like James, even at fifteen. And those others out there who despise James because of Snape's worst memory can bite me, too, and I will do my level best to prove them wrong.

My opinion of James didn't change at all after Book Five. Honestly - I would hate to think of anyone judging my whole life based on something I did back when I was 15. I can remember some pretty crappy things I did when I was younger...but I made a pretty fair adult. :)

I still think that was JKR's way of asking her readers to keep Harry's character in perspective and not to judge him too harshly in OotP. To remember that he's just a kid and people can change a lot before they become who they are going to be.

I think I thought... wow, bitter memory. But I didn't expect Snape to have a very high opinion of any of James, Sirius, Remus, or Peter.

An attorney friend of mine once told me that there are three sides to every circumstance: what you saw, what I saw, and what really happened. I agreed with him then and I agree with him still.

For James to have grown up willing to sacrifice himself to save his loved ones speaks volumes about his character.

Sorry for the comment by a stranger, thing, but - great idea about why JKR included that scene. I think it's probably absolutely true.

Honestly, even if I think James acted poorly in that scene, or was a prat, he still seemed to be a decent kid, and we know that he'd already accepted a werewolf as a friend, and...so I can't even condemn him them. I mean, hopefully he got detention for what he did, but hopefully Snape did too, and then it's just...over. And not really a very big deal.

The huge anti-James reaction post OotP seems quite characteristic of a certain part of the fandom IMO. I've seen a lot of very strange (well strange to me anyway) theories and heated arguments floating about that essentially revolve around the twin presumptions that a person's character is fully formed at 15 and that it simply isn't possible for a decent person to have done something in their youth of which they are not proud as an adult. My reaction to that? Bah, humbug.

If my character were the same now as I was at fifteen, I doubt any of you would have friended my journal except out of pity. :)

I also think the excerpt from Snape's Worst Memory serves so nicely to show the way teenagers act when they are in that first stage of puppy love. It's kind of an oblique way of showing Harry that what he thought was completely true -- Lily despising James -- was nothing like the reality of the situation.

Just a thought. Harry never gets advice about girls.

I still like James. Mind you, I ont perceive him to be the oh-so great guy I thought he was before, but I still definately like him.

He only hated Snape because Snape was totally into the darkarts. And you really have to take into account all the horrible things Snape did to muggles when he was a deatheater (IE: torturing, killing). So I really just dont like Snape...period.
