Goats for hire

I got back from my morning errands with a fresh cup of coffee, and there was a knock at my door. The conversation went something like this:

Guy I Don't Know: Hi, we're bringing about 900 goats to the park to help control the vegetation. Do you want them to clear out your back yard? The former owner used to take us up on that, in exchange for using your water hookup. They'll be here for about three days.

Me: YES.

This is what my back yard looks like with about 100 goats in it:



When they first arrived, it was like... middle school letting out on the last day of the school year. There was a great cry of happiness and a lot of rushing and running. There's a little video of the goats bleating their way to freedom and fresh grass right here. Flickr isn't actually letting me do direct link embedding and I don't want to spend the time figuring that out right now.

Also, there's a Chilean goatherd and one very beautiful herding dog parked just near my house for the next three days. Time to charge up the battery on my real camera and take some good high-resolution photos.

I love living here.

Haha, surprise goats. Yes. I like goats. I used to work with them when I volunteered at the Oregon Zoo. Watching them systematically consume everything green out there is quite the thing, but anything for fire safety around here.

So cute! Not long ago, goats were called in to clear the brush out of the local historic cemetery, which was so overgrown with poison ivy and sumac that it probably would've been dangerous for a human to try to clear it. But goats apparently love the stuff. ^_^ Looking forward to more pictures!

Yes, they'll eat just about anything. It's great to watch. They were let back into the yard an hour or so ago and I snapped some photos, but I'm going for a walk tomorrow in the sunshine to get some closeups. Because the world needs a lot more goat faces, right?

And here I was thinking that every day was being kind of the same. Goes to show: when my personal universe needs a jump-start, it's provided! Let's hope they're always the good kinds of surprises.
