I wrote a thing over on Wordpress on breathing life into characters.

I'm far from an expert, just thought I'd share.

I think I'm going to try what you suggest, writing out some of characters' pivotal memories in their own unique voices. So far, I've not done that, in spite of long, detailed character sheets on each of them, and I'm struggling with my mains feeling a bit opaque still. Good advice!

I'm heavily characterization-based and always have been. I look at this kind of thing as enabling me to write from the inside out, as opposed to from the outside looking down or in, if that makes sense.

Writing down characters' memories: a good exercise. I might use that when I feel blocked. Could be a way to write around obstacles.

I hope it helps! Man, there's nothing worse than coming up against something I can't seem to find my way around as a writer. Generally I just push until something gives. Usually me, heh!
