So I saw two movies yesterday.

First let me say if you've seen the trailer for The Men Who Stare at Goats, you've already got the gist of it without reading a single review. If the trailer appeals to you, you'll probably be as enchanted by this film as I was. It's a very low-key buddy film more than anything else, but if you're a fan of George Clooney (I am, especially in his more comedic roles) and Jeff Bridges (who I've adored ever since Starman) and Kevin Spacey (who does disdainful better than anyone else onscreen) and Ewan McGregor (first time I saw him? Way back in Trainspotting), then how can you go wrong with this one? If you're going to this movie with expectations of rolling in the aisles laughing, you'll probably be disappointed. But if you go for the story and for the nuances and for the acting, it's my humble opinion you'll have an utterly enjoyable time. It's a really, really sweet romp across the desert and through time, through memories, and through possibilities.

It's also the kind of film where once was enough, I think. I don't feel the need to see it again and parse it from top to bottom, but it was thoroughly enjoyable. There's nothing particularly deep about it. LOST fans will like seeing S5 Charlotte in her somewhat pernicious cameo role, and the flashback scenes are wonderfully done and costumed. It's a little bit sentimental and a lot funny, and among the three of us the general consensus was thumbs up... and don't try that thing with the walls. It's bound to fail.

I think I might be the very last person on the planet to have seen Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I watch a lot of movies at home while I multitask. I write, or read, or do crossword puzzles, or roleplay. But pretty much from the minute this movie started I was transfixed and didn't do anything else but watch. Honestly, this is one of those movies I'd put off seeing because so many people told me I had to see it, or talked about it endlessly, and those of you who know me know that's a sign for me to turn in the other direction and run screaming. But apparently it was in the Netflix queue and showed up this weekend. [livejournal.com profile] alienchrist owns it and said he almost brought it. I guess those were all signs, and it was finally time to watch.

I don't really care that it was Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet. I did care a lot about the way the story was revealed, and that trip through Joel's memories was painful and painstaking, and I guess at the end the whole thing was a testament to the strength of human emotions. So I pretty much loved it, and I'll hang onto it until the International Man of Mystery gets back from his trip to India, reacclimates to our time zone, and has a chance to see it.

Nope, I haven't seen Eternal Sunshine yet, so you're penultimate at best. ;)

Thanks for the comments about TMWSaG - Clooney's a sure sign of a well-crafted quirkiness, and you can hardly lose with the rest of that cast. I'm glad to know my guess was correct.
