things I've been liking lately
Nov. 23rd, 2014 03:31 pmMy favorite thing on TV right now is Sonic Highways. I'm consistently enamored by Dave Grohl's music documentaries (Sound City was fantastic). He's such a character, but he's charmingly humble about it and has a way of bringing out some of the most interesting things from the musicians and techs he interviews. In case you don't know, he and the Foo Fighters went on a road trip and visited eight different cities across the U.S., documented the city's musical roots, interviewed a bunch of people in each place, and then recorded a song in each city. The series is absolutely lovely, plus next week they're in Seattle. Nirvana, anyone?
For reasons I can't even explain, we're watching Sons of Anarchy (oh man, SO much testosterone on this show!). I'm almost done with Season 2, so pretty please don't spoil me and tell me things like "oh, Jax runs off and joins the circus and he does it for the club." I don't want to know. I love love love Katey Sagal in this. I love her in everything, so that's no surprise.
Another thing I'm far behind on is Elementary. For a Jeremy Brett as Holmes fan, it almost hurts me to say that I'm really enjoying this rendition. Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu are a great team, and the show is a ton of fun. Aidan Quinn gets bonus points just for being there. Again, I would love to not be spoiled for anything about this one. I'm not even reading the Yuletide prompts for it, because I really want to keep the upcoming stuff a surprise. (I'm on Season 2 of this one too.)
I'm still watching American Horror Story, although I'm a week behind now. Don't worry, AHS, I will find you! What I love about this is not the general grotesqueness but rather the way it's filmed. It's so lyrical and honestly, this season has seen some of my favorite TV cinematography. Also, here's to amazing female characters.
In the "one of these things is not like the other" mode, I wish I could say I liked this season of Hell on Wheels but honestly, I think it sucked on just about every level. I'm not watching it any more if it does get renewed. It's like rubbing salt into an open wound, it's that unappealing to me.
And... I still have the last season of Space Dandy on the DVR. One of these days.
That's my life on the small screen.
