It's the last week of September, or close enough, and that means it's a good time for another writing challenge. I used to run these monthly, but then interest waned and life changed, and yeah, all that stuff happened. But due to popular demand, we'll make another go of it.
So. Autumn. Change. The end of long lazy days, a return to responsibility. Never let it be said I don't get my inspiration from what's right outside my window. Here in sunny Portland, Oregon, September and October are beautiful months. My flowers are still flowering and my birds are still hovering around the feeders. The bees are buzzing and stealing protein-based foods to stock up for winter and the cats are mousing and the mice are running and the voles are digging. But growing up on the east coast (lovely downtown Connecticut, thank you for asking), the end of September heralded an entirely different turn of events. It was time to dig up the plants or put out the mums, cover up the air conditioners, put away the summer clothes and get out the winter ones, stock up on wood for the fireplace for the winter. It always felt like a little death to me to see summer go by the wayside so quickly. On the other hand, autumn had its own promise: spirals of breath making pretty patterns as we waited for the morning school bus, the relief and comfort of sweaters on a crisp day, apple picking and fresh cider, the crackle of leaves beneath our feet. Leaf piles, jumping in amidst the spiders and grubs, things like that.
*ahem.*
Today's challenge follows. It's a little longer on the maximum side than usual to allow the topic to bring out your inner poet.
Rules:
- Fandom: original or fandom ROLEPLAY
- Word count: 800 or less
- Main theme: Autumn through your character's eyes
- Ratings: No restrictions.
- Duration: Challenge opens now (September 27) and closes at 11:59 p.m. in whatever time zone you inhabit on Monday, October 8, stretched out a little just for grins.
Post your ficlets as comments to this entry. Feel free to do as few or as many as you want, and if you see one you really like, be sure to leave a review or a comment. This one's designed to get you thinking about your roleplay character and how they react to an inevitable if familiar event. If you don't roleplay but still want to join in, pick a character or make one up. How's that sound?
Let's play.
