She is not smiling on us today.

Kitty update: last week at her six-week post-surgery checkup, the vet removed one of the pins that was working its way back out of Tabasco's hip. Quick surgery, no big deal, no big cost, just slice and pull and sew. Well, you know how I said she'd been limping? And then a few days ago she couldn't even put weight on that leg? Today, we found out why. After having her fast for some 13 or 14 hours, they took her for x-rays and found that the remaining pin in her hip joint was also migrating... but this one's going inward. It's already about a centimeter into bone and if they don't get it out, it could pass through into her abdominal cavity and cause a mess and infection and worse. So tomorrow, she's having more surgery to have that fixed. The good news is that her hip isn't broken again. The bad news is that he's never seen this before, so he has to go in between groin and abdomen and remove it that way. The good news is that if it's successful, the recovery shouldn't be another six weeks because the bone isn't mending. The bad news is that he's never had to do this before. So, please, wish us luck. I would hate to have to put her through this and find out something else went wrong, or have him call and say there was some sort of O.R. catastrophe and she didn't make it, or...

Fuck. This has been one of those weeks. I always say it, but my cats are like my children, they're like Hannah's brothers and sisters. I love my pets fiercely and I'm very protective of them. So there's no use second-guessing and saying "gee, if he'd only taken the other pin out last week..." or "gee, don't they know that if you remove one rod it leaves wiggle room for the next?" or any of those things. I don't know how long it will take and I don't know how much it will cost.

Daughter update: strep throat, contagious for 23 more hours. No school for one more day for her. Now I pay grave attention to my own throat. I haven't had strep in ages and I know what it feels like, but every little scratch and dryness is now suspect.

Gah.

And tonight is parent's night at Hannah's school, which she's missed most of the week and will miss again tomorrow. I'll see if I can get homework info from her teachers. If not, she'll just have a boatload to make up next week. So much as I'd rather be here, I'll be away tonight at this school extravaganza, worrying about my cat and my daughter.

(And I think to myself: what a wonderful world. At least the antibiotics for the strep only set us back $3 and change.)
