This is the first year in probably 4 or 5 that we haven't overnighted at a hotel down by the waterfront to watch the fireworks from Fort Vancouver (largest fireworks display west of the Mississippi!), and I'm just as glad. Instead we spent the day doing some gardening, which was very lovely. We got a brand-new trumpet honeysuckle to grow up the side of our house and over a to-be-built-tomorrow arbor, and a very beautiful Nile Lily for out in the front where it's hot all day long. We also weeded out all the noxious Persian violets (pretty but invasive) and I filled the bird feeders, stalked by Captain Jack and heralded by scrub jays. Now to just refill the hummingbird feeder...

We're supposed to be off in search of fireworks tonight. Maybe yes, maybe no. I'm feeling highly lousy but I did take the day off from doing much of anything other than yard work, which was a nice relief.

Captain Jack update: We have decided that he is a dog in cat's clothing. He follows us around the house, stalks us, plays mercilessly, loves to have his tummy scratched, and is very protective in general. One thing that's so cool about him is that he still has that outline of kitty tummy. He doesn't have worms, but he's so sleek except for a tiny rounding at his tummy. He's very very adorable and gets along with all our other cats. Mitch and I were talking about him today, wondering how he found our house of all houses. He was bound and determined that this was his home; from the moment he got here he's never strayed, although from the moment the original owners let him outside he never went back there. It is a case of cat meeting destiny with grand results.

Hannah's new hobby: painting rocks with her permanent markers. She sells them for a penny apiece. These are miniature masterpieces and at that price, I can afford a whole bunch of them.

And Holy Fruitcakes, Batman! What fast turnaround! Chapter Six of Ferret Day is on the Quill already. Only one more chapter to go.
