Many gulls and a pair of bald eagles later, we're in our second night on the very wet and very stormy Oregon coast. We spent last night in Cannon Beach, which is absolutely beautiful and highly tolerable this time of year. In the summer it's way too crowded, but we stayed right at Haystack Rock in a very dog-friendly hotel (are you listening,
sff_corgi?) We watched many canines frolic happily while the storm blew in and the sand moved like a scene out of Hidalgo. The hotel also had a pool and a pair of hot tubs, and a jacuzzi tub in the room, and a gas fireplace. It was so lovely.
Woke up to a beautiful day today and went for a walk on the beach at low tide, so you could actually walk across to Haystack Rock. It was cold, though, and windy, and we headed back (which was way easier than heading south into the fierce wind). Just as we got back to the steps leading up to the hotel, it started to rain.
We packed, warmed up, and drove south to Newport so we could go to the Aquarium with Hannah. Unfortunately, it was a really long drive and it poured. I mean, it poured. We did make it to the aquarium (http://www.aquarium.org), which is where Keiko used to live when he was recovering from Free Willy, and they've transformed his old habitat into a very nice exhbit where you can walk through and the guys and gals of the ocean can swim around and over you. Lots of rays and skates and sharks swimming all around you; it's pretty.
But it poured. So we skipped a lot of the exhibits, because they're outside. I've been a bunch of times, and Hannah's favorite place there, a little play park, was off-limits today. We only stayed for an hour and a half or so, then headed back up here to Pacific City. This place isn't right on the beach, but it's right across the street and we have a lovely view. There are some really amazing waves yesterday and today. Storm watching here can be a lot of fun.
Tomorrow we head back home. I'm sure the weather will clear up by... oh, Sunday.
Happy birthday, Perceval! I have no internet access or I'd send you a happy birthday email too. I have to confess, it's a little nice to have a break from the web and from managing web sites and all that good stuff too.
