Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] sff_corgi for alerting me to Bruce Lee, A Warrior's Journey on AMC-TV earlier today. This was one of the better documentaries I've seen on Bruce, and wow. Almost as much as I love to hear his philosophy and outlook, I love to watch the way he moved. He was so fast you almost couldn't even see the motion. Just the start and stop.

It shouldn't surprise any of you who've known me for a while to learn I've been a Bruce Lee fan forever. "Become water, my friend."

Hannah watched some of it with me. She asked who that guy was and I told her he was probably the single most famous martial artist in all of history. She shrugged and said, "Well, I would have thought that it would be someone Chinese." I laughed and told her he was Chinese, just like her. Her interest suddenly perked up just a little more and her next words were: "Wow, he has a lot of muscle."

I'm glad she watched what she did with me. Lee had some amazingly insightful words for her to hear on Chinese stereotyping. I hope they sunk in a little bit for her. Be proud, my little one.

And those comments can be applied to just about anybody other than 20-something Anglo/Celtic guy, y'know? Even white women don't get that many roles and aren't as well paid, never mind women of colour.

Thank goodness for the Meryl Streeps and Jackie Chans and Hallie Berrys who won't sit pat.

Gotta ask, though... why did Hannah think he wasn't Chinese?
