I guess I did bring it upon myself by asking. And I'm supposed to tell you the rules:

1. Leave a comment, saying you want to be interviewed.
2. I will respond; I will ask you five questions.
3. You'll update your journal with my five questions, and your five answers.
4. You'll include this explanation.
5. You'll ask other people five questions when they want to be interviewed.

1. What inspired you to become a massage therapist, especially considering hairy backs and all the laundry involved?

When I was little, I wanted to be a nurse. Then I found out about... [dread music]bedpans.[/dread music] I'm not stupid. So I went to college and became an English major, which is highly useful for me in my writing guise, but doesn't pay the bills. After a while, though, I actually got paid to work in my chosen field as a technical writer. How many ways can you say boring? I wanted to do something that would help make a difference, and I liked something in health care, but I felt like I was too old to put in all that time in med school. So... I looked into massage schools and decided that might be a fun way to do something good. But it took me 7 years to get from looking to actually going, because we adopted Hannah in the midst of it all (see Question Four).

Since getting licensed, I've massaged more than my share of hairy and smooth backs, tattooed backs and pockmarked backs, and laundered enough linens to keep a small independent nation in fresh sheets. For a handful of people, what I do now has made a significant difference... so I'm happy.

2. What factors had how much weight in causing you to become vegetarian? And exactly how veggie are you?

I was a vegetarian for a while as a teenager, but didn't have enough willpower to stick to it. Then, I did it because it was cruel to animals and I was idealistic.

When I decided to become a vegetarian again about 10 years ago, I did it as much as a challenge to myself as anything else. I wanted to see if I could, and I knew it would be healthier for me, and yeah, it's still a cruel joke to eat animals. I still ate seafood for a long time, and I never gave up dairy. After about a year, I stopped the seafood too, because it didn't make sense to keep eating that.

Maybe a year ago I added seafood back in again for a while, because my body was craving protein and tofu wasn't fitting the bill. But I've given it up again for Lent. No, because it doesn't make me feel good after I eat it. I am pretty sensitive to what types of things my body tries to tell me, and I also like to pay attention to those things. As opposed to acknowledging them and and beating them back with a large stick.

3. If you had to make some ghastly and improbable life-and-death decision between Sirius and Spike, who would you save and why?

You are so cruel.

I'd save Sirius, because otherwise [livejournal.com profile] medeni_ci_jones would kill me.

4. If it's not a problem asking in public, what led you to decide to adopt from A: outside the U.S. and B: outside your physical-ethnic group?

Not a problem. Open Books 'R' Us. Outside the US because I didn't want to be one of those people who turned 50 still waiting for a healthy American newborn. That wasn't the point. The point was to become a family, and outside the US is a lot easier than adopting inside the US. When we first decided to adopt, we decided that we wanted an infant (for reasons that were obviously very important then--the need to do the diaper thing?), and China had just opened up for adoption.

Outside our physio-ethnic group because...who cares a whit about that? Not I. That wasn't even a matter of consideration. I'd have adopted any child of any race. Although it became a small act of unintentional defiance with some to-remain-unnamed family members who told us we needed to adopt a child who'd look like us, otherwise they'd know they were adopted... ((groan))

I did run a support group for parents waiting to adopt from China for a lot of years. There are lots of issues I've given a lot of thought to, and have actually (amazing!) had papers published on these very subjects. Go visit my web site; you can find some of them.

5. Of course -- Why, for you, does Sirius ROX?

Tall, dark, and handsome, unerringly loyal, with a wicked sense of humour, an intense hatred of Snape, and an extremely bitter side--what's not to like? Up until Dementor in Hardcover came out, we knew so little about him that he was fair game for all sorts of backstory. I don't say proud owner of Cymro!Sirius in my profile for no good reason. I was irritated that Herself didn't see fit to use the past I'd created, but... siriusly, he ROX because he's the coolest, most unapproachable, most mysterious, baddest bad boy in current popular fiction. Arrogant with a hidden heart of gold. How can I possibly resist.

(read between the lines and repeat this mantra after me: theyshouldhavecastJasonCarter, theyshouldhavecastJasonCarter.)

Not to mention the fact that I've lived inside Sirius' head for a longlong time. Come, role-play with us. You know you want to.
