Drabble Me This

In honor of Valentine's Day, a writing challenge!

Rules:

Fandom: any fandom.
Word count: According to my sources, a drabble is precisely 100 words. No more, no less.
Main theme: What's love got to do with it?
Ratings: No restrictions.
Duration: Challenge opens now (February 12) and runs for a week. Closes at the end of day Friday, February 19.

A while ago I did an experiment in precise writing with ficlets of exactly 100 words and it was so much fun and I felt so accomplished that I decided to do it again. But I get bored looking at my own stuff, so... here you go. We should all be able to come up with 100 words in a week's time, right?

Post your fics as comments to this entry, or post them in your own journal and link to your story below. Feel free to do as few or as many as you want, and if you read one, be sure to leave a review or a comment. Everyone's welcome, so spread the word.

Dude, 100 words only and exactly is HARD. :P

Commented there but I'll say it here: that was gorgeous. And I didn't even know where you were going with it until it arrived at its perfect destination.

If it were about love, everything would be simple. But it's not. It's about trust and certainty. When he takes that late-night phone call and leaves her alone and heartsore in the middle of the night, she lies there not knowing where he is or what he's doing. Even if she'll ever see him again. She needs more than this, more than empty love. That he can't see that is the reason it's falling apart. She knows as she watches him go that it can't last.

If she leaves, it'll break his heart. If she doesn't, it'll break hers.

Nothing.
Nothing for it, they told him. The attack too quick, her decision not to leave even quicker, her wand shielding, laying cover – others tended the wounded.
Nothing but chaos, the cutting hex hitting her, her wand remaining a blur, until there was nothing left for her to give.
Everything.
The ring, burning a hole in his pocket but not like he thought it would. Everything depending on the question that had no answer now. Everything was different, every decision unchanged.
In crisp, new Auror robes, there was nothing left to die for, but there was everything to fight for.

Here's one from Mr. Saxophone.
Fandom: Cowboy Bebop

Her heart beats like music. It reads like a score: an eighth-note here, a rest, a quarter-note, a sharp little crescendo catching the ear, making short work of expectations, taking a man's breath away with its ridiculous beauty. It's in the key of C, the universal key, the home key, the one with which everyone resonates. It's smooth and seductive, her song, all the more surprising for the way it sneaks up on you (in the rarely used tempo andantino) when you never intended to listen in the first place.

After all, women aren't my style and music isn't love.

Oh Gren. This is just absolutely beautiful, from the extended musical metaphor right through to that little bit at the end. So sweet and a little melancholy and hopeful, too.

I love love love how you write. Anything and everything, even stuff done in a subject I totally don't get. The last line is perfect. I really do feel like these are fic haikus because they are like stuffing a complete story into 100 words and the last bit is usually some kind of twist. ♥

Oh, I like this a lot! I don't know the fandom or the characters, but it's perfect. You've got talent, just like G. :)

This: It was a bond formed by humans as a psychological compulsion in order to better raise their offspring, or a mysterious force that we'll never properly understand. is spot on.

also, I didn't have a word count mechanism either, but I Googled and found this site which works well and counts contractions as one word: http://www.wordcounttool.com/

And yours is exactly 100 words, so good counting if you counted manually!

:)

Without a heart one can still conceptualize love. One can still carry the memory of what it was like to be loved. But what he can't recall no matter how hard he tries is the quality of the feeling of love. He can't know looking into someone's eyes and understanding deep inside that things are good and complete. That he's wanted for who he is, flaws and warts, bad moods and all. No, there's always that layer of doubt that colors every interaction. The moral of the story, he supposes, is never enter into a contract with a fire demon.

Undoing

Undressed for the hotspring, Koumyou is a naked collection of fine bones and scars. Ukoku catches the end of his braid as he walks away. He pulls off the tie, lets it unravel a little.

So they stand, Ukoku still mostly clothed, Koumyou nude, the braid a rope between them.

"Don't undo what you can't repair," Koumyou warns lightly.

"I know how to braid hair," Ukoku mutters darkly. He's never done it, but how difficult can it be for a genius?

"You might learn," Koumyou agrees, "But are your fingers as precise and steady as Kouryuu's?"

"...Not him again." A common complaint.

"Let go, please?"

Ukoku hesitates.

Her laughter. The mischief in her eyes. The way she was so studious. Her determination, the fervor with which she did her research, her excitement when a theory proved true. She absolutely shone at everything she did, and she was fearless. Fearless, beautiful, coy, flirtatious: who wouldn't have loved her? I can still hear her voice calling my name, still see the surprise on her face when we first met. Why did they send his...

That fragment never made sense to me, not until the day I saw my father's file on her computer. Only then did I finally understand.

I believe in taking every opportunity you can.

I believe in living life to the fullest.

I believe I deserve a life of luxury.

I believe in setting aside half of any casino winnings for the sole purpose of more gambling and drinking scotch on the rocks in strange bars because they can't get it wrong.

I believe that it's better to shoot first and ask questions later and that you can only rely on yourself.

I believe I have a past even though I can't remember it.

I believe in lying whenever it's necessary.

I don't believe in love.

Understanding

Ukoku and Koumyou settle into the hotspring, disrupting the moon's reflection on water.

"Does it over bother you I killed your friend?" Ukoku breaks the meditative silence.

"Should it bother me?" Koumyou sinks back, breathing in languid steam.

"I'd be angry." Ukoku smiles, showing his teeth.

"I suppose you would, if you had friends to lose."

"Like you?"

Koumyou only smiles in reply.

Ukoku huffs a sigh, looking very teenaged. "Sometimes I don't understand you."

"Why are you trying?"

"I understand everything." He has to understand to take apart.

"Do you now?" Faint amusement, almost mocking.

A pause with gentle water sounds. Ukoku narrows dark, stubborn eyes. "It just takes time."

Here I come with the slash again.

Fandom: Lost
Ratings: PG
Characters: Jacob's nemesis, Richard Alpert

Jacob swallows them up, spits them out. He anticipates this happening to Richard. He wants this to happen to Richard, because Richard is something to want. Richard is something he wants. Richard is handsome and idealistic and easy to manipulate, easy to crush. He will need someone to lift him when Jacob's walls fall down, and so he will wait

and he will wait

and he will wait until the desire has become anger and frustration. Jacob still has Richard in chains, and Richard will never be free.

Richard will never be free unless he forces him to be free.

I will tell you I haven't yet been in the business of shipping Richard with anyone, but see, I want to say I told you you're a really good writer! There are some turns of phrase in here that are just gorgeous. I'm so glad you caved and wrote this.

Richardshipping is a relatively new thing for me. I didn't start until The Incident. To be fair, I can't help but think Richard is a man a lot of people want but who is oblivious to all this, himself. Which will be awfully fun to write...
