So. Hi everyone! FINALLY the last season's started! I'm still digesting in a WTF kind of way, but here are some highlights for me, and please to discuss. Note that the opinions of the management of this journal are probably going to be stated a bunch.

Things I liked:
The opening sequence just before the credits with the island underwater. That was pretty damn cool.

The airplane continuity timeline. Actually, I loved the airplane continuity timeline, all of it. It reminded me of the ending episodes of the first season where the whole plane trip and the events leading up to it were explored. These are the characters that captivated my interest; these are the ones whose stories I want to see. Yes, I know they've evolved and changed, but these are the characters written the way I like: smart, savvy, dangerous, unpredictable.

The way all the stories wove together. I liked them all meeting up, and the way things were twisted just enough: Desmond on the plane, that hint of recognition between him and Jack, Rose being the calm one, Sun having short hair again (continuity, people), Charlie locking himself in the bathroom, his sullenness, getting carted off the plane. Edward being such a butt to Kate, Kate being so crafty. She gets a whole separate thing here in a minute. Rose and Bernard being adorable. Sawyer being a pain in the ass. Sayid being helpful and using his legs like we know he can. Jack being... Jack.

Losing Dad. I didn't anticipate Christian's body going missing, but I like that it did. And I liked Locke telling Jack that the airline hadn't lost his father, just his father's body. And that Locke lost his knives. Seems like there's a theme going on there.

Kate. I like Kate. She's a great character and I have always liked her, with a few minor exceptions. What I thought was so great about her in the airplane continuity was that she was every bit as desperate as the Kate who gave Mars a reason to have to carry five guns with him on the flight. She was tough, smart, opportunistic, and dangerous and never gave up. She's always running; she always will be running (in that continuity). I liked her hijacking Claire's cab. I liked the way she outsmarted Mars, and that he ended up conked on the head the same way off the plane as he did on the plane in the series pilot.

The Elevator SceneTM. VINTAGE Sawyer and Kate, and they didn't even know each other yet. All he had to do was see those cuffs on her, and he immediately moved into that whole subtle honor-among-thieves thing he's so good at... when it suits him.

Charlie acting like an addict. Yup. He was horrid, and I'm glad. I never really was all that fond of Charlie and thought it was a mean twist by the writers to make him so sympathetic before they killed him off. This reminded me how awful he really was at the start of the show, and how great that was.

Luckiest guy in the world: "Nothing bad ever happens to me." I loved that so hard. I think it doesn't bode well for on-island Hurley, but we'll see.

There was also stuff I liked on-island:

Hurley. ♥ ♥ ♥ Out of all the people stuck on the island, he's like... the only one who's risen to the occasion and actually turned into an even better person. He was pretty goddamn kickass, taking charge of things.

Ben being shocked. At least once.

The irrelevant passengers meeting Smokey. Come on, you didn't think they were actually going to last, did you?

Sun. She got to talk. A tiny bit. That's better than nothing.

Frank. "They say they're the good guys." How many times have we heard that?

Jacob actually admitting he'd been killed. That was cool. I didn't expect that. And then... [livejournal.com profile] lostinapapercup said she read a theory that Sayid was now inhabited by Jacob, just like Locke was kind of sort of inhabited by Smokey the Monster, and I wouldn't put it past them to do that but I'd be happier if Sayid could just be Sayid.

Things I didn't like:
Bringing Juliet back just to kill her again. Can you say "filler" six times fast? Oh, wait, that's right, it was just an excuse so we could a) see Elizabeth Mitchell again and b) give Sawyer an excuse to death-glare at Jack a whole bunch of times. Seriously, is she going to stay dead this time? Not that we actually saw her die last season.

Yay, MORE new characters. Like we need that.

Sayid's dying, let's all leave him alone and go rescue Juliet instead. Hi. The doctor is OUT. I realize it was a choice, but logic would dictate something like this: "You guys stay and help Sawyer. We'll take Sayid to this temple and save him!" But noooo. We all get to stay and help rescue Juliet. Sayid'll be okay. After all, he's in the Dharma van with a bunch of beer!

Your teeth are so white they glow in the dark. This is nitpicky, but I couldn't help but notice how gleaming and pearly white both Sawyer's and Juliet's teeth were down in the Swan hatch. It was actually incredibly jarring; all I could look at that whole scene was the bright whitened teeth.

Jack is an idiot. Was he always an idiot? I can't remember any more. Oh wait, yes, he was. Never mind.

Okay, I'm sure there's so much more, and I'll remember it as the day progresses and I'll probably rewatch just because this time I can forward through the ads, so there's likely to be more. I VOTE FOR THE AIRPLANE TIMELINE, OKAY? Even though I'm sure that somehow, somewhere, it will end up with all of them being just as much of a set of douchebags as they already are. It's karma, baby.
