Do you think Charlie Parker would quote Goethe?
(I really need to finish my Bebop dub transcription project.)
Last night I watched an excellent documentary called The Jazz Baroness. It details the relationship between Pannonica de Koenigswarter ("Nica") and Thelonious Monk (and to a lesser degree, Charlie Parker), a story I didn't really know much about until yesterday. The documentary was made for the BBC by Hannah Rothschild, Nica's grand-niece, and boy was it lovingly done. It's only 83 minutes long and it's airing on HBO2 (and on demand) this month. I'm so glad I saw it.
It doesn't really matter whether or not you're a jazz fan; it was mostly a hell of a look at American society in the 1950s with Monk's story transposed against Nica's. Monk's music is an ever-present backdrop to the documentary which is chock full of interviews wtih all sorts of people, and... it was pretty beautiful.
