Elaine had a family, once. They loved her, and she loved them. But they didn’t understand her, and she was afraid of them, so when she died, she was most alone of any of them, no loving brother to kiss her good bye, older brother unhappy, father bewildered with grief.

And it was alone that Elaine faced the grave.

In Milliways, she found herself taken care of by a sentient Bar, a fairy-tale princess, a bounty hunter, and a former airline stewardess. Eventually, many other people would talk to her, and little by little, Elaine opened up her heart and allowed people in.

She found freedom and acceptance, and eventually, love. And she was happy, and no longer alone. She had a family again.

Sometimes she feels guilty for loving her second family better than her first family.
