7 Lines from Better Backstage

scribble_myname tagged me for this meme, so what the hell, why not! It goes like this:

Pull seven lines from the seventh page of your WIP, then you're supposed to tag seven other writers.

My moral dilemma is always this: do I go with my double-spaced manuscript to get to the 7th page, or single-space it to see what happens?

7 lines from the double-spaced version:

Without saying a word she hands me her coffee in its to-go cup. It’s sweet of her but I wave it off. I’m not a white chocolate mocha type of guy and for all the time we’ve spent together on this tour, I’m sure that’s exactly what she’s drinking this time of day.

"What," she says, laughter filling in the rough edges of her accusation, "are you afraid caffeine might actually make you string a few words together?"

"Guilty," I tell her, trying hard not to smile. This is the same dance we’ve been doing the past few months. A step forward, two steps back.



7 lines from the single-spaced version (so I'm cheating, too bad):

"Sound diffusion."

The corner of Jesse’s mouth curves up in a smile. "You really are a complete fucking geek." Before I can protest, she adds one more thing. "I like that about you."

I try not to smile too hard, but there’s nothing about that effort that isn’t a losing proposition. Lucky for my self esteem, she doesn’t say a word about it.
