How cold was it?
[insert punch line here]
It was SO COLD that last night, in order to get warm enough to sleep in my (admittedly rarely heated) loft-like bedroom, I had to bundle up in a t-shirt, shorts, sweatpants, socks, a sweater, and a hat, and put two regular and one down blanket on the bed.
Color me absolutely miserable. It was 17 degrees out this morning when I went to take the kid to school. AT LEAST IT'S NOT PRECIPITATING. Thank you, arctic blast moving down from British Columbia to warm the cockles of my nothing at all. It took me about an hour to fall asleep last night even though I was thoroughly exhausted, because I was just too cold. And then about 45 minutes later... the smoke alarm went off.
There was no smoke. The house was just cold. It's a hard-wired alarm too, so the 1:45 a.m. solution was to turn off the power breaker that supplies it (not to worry, kids, we also have a battery-powered smoke alarm up on the ceiling next to that one). Doing a little web research today informed me that the hard-wired alarms have a tendency to go off when it's very cold. Who knew? So just now, we cleaned it out with compressed air and turned the power back on. We'll see if it starts chirping again as the temperature drops. If it does, we'll just replace it with a new one. They're not that hard to install. However.
Please, please, please. This is a temperate rainforest I live in. It's not supposed to be this cold. This afternoon and evening I am heating the house thoroughly with my wood stove. It keeps the house toasty, although I try to conserve on burning the wood (at least it's a renewable resource, yay?). But when it's this cold (and I am so, so stiff and chilled and miserable today), I have to do it.
