R.I.P., my good old laptop.

It's good news and bad news. Bad news first: apparently, the DC power adapter, which on that model of Dell Inspiron is actually soldered to the motherboard so that it can't ever be simply replaced (reminds me of the batteries on the treos before the 650s), has died an untimely but not unexpected death. Untimely because I don't think I had it for three years, quite, but not unexpected because the technician who came to look at it for me said that there had been kind of spate of PCs with this same failure, same make and model reported recently. The Inspiron 8600 model was new when I got it and I hear through the repair-guy grapevine that Dell's since remedied that design flaw.

And that's a good thing, because I'll probably get another Dell. I'm kind of in love with the little Fujitsu Lifebooks, but they're so damn expensive, I can't afford one of those. As it is, I'll be digging into the coin jar for this next one. Good thing it's a big jar and it's mostly full of quarters. I could go count. Some other time.

Now, for the good news: all the data on my hard drive is intact. And the tech told me I could get a hard drive USB docking thing for my next PC for about $50 and it would, for all intents and purposes, become a USB hard drive and after I wiped all my data off it after I copied it, I could have another nice shiny 30gb hard drive sitting around... and if it's a USB drive, I can use it for backup purposes without backup software, particularly, and that's something I never did have for my RIP laptop.

Man. Technobabble. How dull is this? Dig out my eyes with a fork right now, only don't, because I don't type as well without them.

Unless I'm writing fiction. That I do with my eyes wide shut. In fact, as soon as I get my new PC, I can do that again. See, in a fit of wisdom I saved all my original fic-in-progress to a flash drive. I'm smart that way sometimes. I do have a lot of crap on my HD, though, and I don't need it all. I can be picky and choosy. And take my time. I'm so excited about it. First, though, I'll really have to order a new laptop.

In other, non-tech-geek news, we escaped the heat tonight to watch Monster House. *yawn* Now there's a backstory that needed help Kathleen Turner couldn't provide.
