There's a short answer and a long answer. I'll give you both.
The short answer: I was sick of being a technical writer and the timing was right.
The long answer: from the time I was little, I always wanted to do something like nursing or being a doctor or... something where I could help people. Then when I got older and realized that it was 8 more years of school for an MD and almost as much for an RN, I let go of it and went back to writing.
Then I really did get tired of working in high tech. The money was sweet, but I went from QA to tech writing and when we adopted Hannah I quit the office job and did tech editing and copy editing. But working at home by myself with a wee baby wasn't all that inspirational, so it was time to go back to school and learn something new. Massage training was just one year, or two if you did it part-time, and I could take classes at night and not disrupt parenting. One of the requirements for the massage school I chose was a weekend away and when I first looked into it as a newlywed I couldn't imagine a weekend apart, but by the time I got around to school, it was just fine.
Now I've been licensed for over 3 years and I still enjoy it. Given my Gemini ascendant and my need to keep moving no matter what, it's been a good fit.
