Dear Yuletide Author...

Hi, hi, hi! I can't believe this is my third Yuletide already. At Archive of Our Own I'm blue (r_lee), just so there's no confusion.

I'm copying wholesale from last year's letter, because most of it still stands. Let me tell you a few things about me and my fic preferences right up front. First, if you snoop around my LJ at all, you'll see I'm a roleplayer and I just might have active characters from some of my requested fandoms. Please, please, please don't let this make you hesitate at all. I play in fandoms I love and I love all the fandoms I picked for Yuletide.

I'm a stickler for characterization. Here's what that means: I like it best when the characters act like they do (or as they would) canonically. I also love alternate universes and throwing things at them they wouldn't necessarily encounter in canon. The most important thing to me is well-crafted characterization. If the characters in the story feel like the characters I know, I'll enjoy it no matter what the circumstances, pairings, settings, and plot. I'm also a fan of understanding their motivations. Moody introspective pieces thrill me. Action-adventure pieces thrill me. Romantic pieces are great, especially when the pairing is canon. Dramatic tension is beautiful. Backstory is my favorite thing of all, and I love to know what characters are thinking.

What I don't love are fics centered on gratuitous violence, incest, or rape. People being forced to do things against their will, especially as a way of demeaning them, aren't the types of stories I enjoy. As far as slash goes, it's not something I typically write or seek out to read but if it's something you typically write, I won't say no. Write what you love and your love of it will shine through, and I'll be so appreciative and happy. One of my favorite things is getting to unwrap my Yuletide story and savor it.

Last Exile
Alex Row, Sophia Forrester, Mullin Shetland, Vincent Alzey (Teen and Up). I would love either backstory or future-story on any one of these characters, or any combination of these characters. If it's future-story, how did they get to be where they are? What was the impact of the war and Exile on their lives? For backstory, what brought them to where they are at any point in canon? What were their lives like before we see them; who did they love, who were their friends, what kinds of things did they do? It can be immediately pre-canon or way back.

This is my only repeat canon from last year, and I love our tiny little steampunky canon in all its blazing imperfection. My absolute favorite thing about Last Exile is the richness of its adult characters, but I'm not a big fan of the kids except as incidental to the larger story. What's missing from the show are two things: backstory on the adults, particularly Alex, Vincent, Mullin, and Sophia (and Euris, naturally) and some sort of future resolution for Sophia and/or Vincent. My request is for either back- or future-story on any or all of these characters, but don't feel that you have to cram them all in if they're not a natural fit for what you have going. I will most assuredly love whatever it is you come up with. And if it's the Guild you favor, then let the Claudia units rip! Tell me all about Dio and Lucciola and Delphine. Tell me about the purging of the Houses. Tell me about Delphine's dogged pursuit of the Mysteria: whatever floats your boat! I will most assuredly gobble it up and adore it to pieces. Let your imagination run wild.

Baccano!
Isaac Dian, Miria Harvent, Claire Stanfield, Ladd Russo (Mature). If you could take a moment in time and give me a slice of it Baccano!-style, either aboard the Flying Pussyfoot or after, I would be in heaven. Don't let the character choices here limit you; I love the entire cast and would be happy with any or all of them so long as it's evocative of canon. I love the wordiness and the never-ending narrative of the series, along with its sense of humor.

As long as we're talking anime, Baccano! is absolutely one of my favorite series. I love the mood and raucous and wild swinging of the story and the characters. I love the way it jumps back and forth in time. I am a stupid sucker for Ladd Russo, even though he's entirely despicable, and would be tickled to see what you believe makes him tick. I'm equally a sucker for Claire and Chane, for Jacuzzi and Nice and the gang. If you're game to tackle Isaac and Miria I would adore you forever. Every time I watch this series I feel like I'm on a wild mouse roller coaster with no seatbelt, and if you can capture that same manic feel in a fic I would be so delighted. Even if you wanted to go behind the scenes at the newspaper and give us a look at things from the boss's point of view, or go into more depth on Rachel and the others, I will be happy. All that general stuff stated, I again would love, love, love to know what these characters have going on inside.

War for the Oaks
Willy Silver, Hedge, Phouka, Eddi McCandry (Mature). In the book, Willy is presented in an almost stylized way. I'd love to know what he's like when we don't see him: what makes him tick, what ways he's more human than not. Where he goes, what he does, what responsibilities lie on his shoulders. Insight into the Seelie Court would be great, but so would backstory on what he's done in his travels.

Oh, where do I start. To me, the backbone of this book is the quest for understanding. It's either Willy's quest to understand love or death, or Eddi's quest to understand her role in the battle or in the indy band world, or Phouka's quest to balance his desire for Eddi versus his responsibility to the Seelie Court, or the desire for the Seelie and Unseelie courts to come to some sort of understanding with one another. While I'm most interested in a look into Willy's world and personality, any set of characters will do! Any, and I do mean any. If Willy doesn't interest you but Hedge does, bring it on. He's a great and under-explored character in his own right. One of my very favorite things about the book is the blending and intermingling of the human and faerie worlds, so if you can bring that into play, I will follow you around like Hairy Meg forever and cook you things. Evoke the feel of the book and throw in a few dashes of the mid-80s pop scene and I'll be so happy.

Dance Me Outside
Frank Fencepost, Silas Crow, Sadie Maracle (Teen and Up). I am such a sucker for Silas and Frank as friends. I'm also a much bigger fan of the film than of the related fandoms, if that makes any difference to you. I would love a slice-of-life piece about the two of them, or the two of them with Sadie (their conscience and voice of reason). Pick any of the poignant moments in the film -- the murder, the behind-the-scenes machinations with Illiana & Gooch, the ARM stuff -- and show it to me Silas & Frank style and I'll adore you forever.

MORE SILAS PLEASE. And more Frank, who is probably one of the best characters ever to grace the screen. I'm a much bigger fan of the film than of the book(s) or graphic novel, so anything evocative of the film will make me jump up and down with glee. The story as presented in the film is pretty delightful and pretty complete, but anything you can do to embellish it would be such a treat. If you want to give me a deleted scene between Silas and Frank, I would love it like crazy. If you want to go into the rez politics and the murder investigation, I would love it. If you want to investigate Sadie and her motivations, I would love that too. If you want to explore more about the relationship between Illiana & Gooch, I'd be good with that too, but Silas and Frank are really my favorites.

Thank you so much in advance. I appreciate and admire you already!
