****************
The rug near the fireplace was my domain. I could easily ignore anything
that was more than a meter away from me. There was the television in the
background, but the programme was too dull. Mr and mrs were both reading
books, the little girl was playing with a stack of newspapers.
I liked that sound. Rustling paper, crisp, new, full of words. Sometimes,
when Mr was about to unfold the paper, I felt the urge to snatch it away.
I had heard nothing about my world ever since I left it.
It had been too long, far too long.
I started to feel restless again, and sniffed the rug. Then, lifting my
head, I inhaled. Ink. It could be printed on paper or parchment, but it
smelled the same. On nights like this one, it made me long even more for
news. I sat up and looked in the direction of the girl. I'd hardly
realised that mrs had got up to make coffee.
"What is it, dear?" she said, patting my head. "Want something to play
with?"
I tried to hold back that sound of longing, a sound closely resembling
the one I made when my food was ready.
"Do you want to go outside?" she asked.
How could I tell this to her. I was the pet of the family. To all of
them I looked like a lazy dog right now, bored on a Sunday evening. They
thought I felt good here, safe and warm. It was true of course, but I
also knew their home would never be my real home, that no house would
ever be. Not now I was so sure again that I'd failed to keep the last
promise to my best friend.
"Harry," I thought, "Harry, I miss you."
