in_the_blue: (can't be any more surprised)
Following up on my last post, it's reveal time! For [community profile] ineedmyfics I went old-school and wrote...

Boom Boom Boom (3217 words) by r_lee
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Battlestar Galactica (2003)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Galen Tyrol/Sharon "Boomer" Valerii
Characters: Sharon "Boomer" Valerii, Galen Tyrol, Kara Thrace, Karl Agathon
Additional Tags: Pre-Canon
Summary: One of these days, Boomer would stick the landing.

One of these days.

I also wrote a treat:

The Monster (1009 words) by r_lee
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Divergent Series - Veronica Roth
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Caleb Prior
Summary: "Anger is the enemy of non-violence and pride is a monster that swallows it up." - Mahatma Gandhi

A Caleb Prior character study.

That was fun. If you read, let me know. I've spent a lot of time recently feeling like I can't write fanfic well any more, but I think these came out okay.

Remember back when [livejournal.com profile] lostinapapercup and I ran a RP game called [livejournal.com profile] outpost_12? I do. ♥ For today's entry in the December meme, [livejournal.com profile] lostinapapercup asked for people at [livejournal.com profile] outpost_12 getting into the holiday spirit. I decided to keep the fic solely to some of the characters the two of us played, because those are the ones I know best.

Oh, my heart.

Tonight, [personal profile] lostinapapercup and I watched No Exit. You know the one, from Season 4 of Battlestar Galactica. I only have myself to blame, but my heart, my heart, my heart. Paige, how many times have I watched that episode? How can it be that this show still moves me to tears? It's really one of my favorite Sam episodes for so many reasons, and one of my least favorite for all the other reasons. It's so beautifully acted and so painfully written.

I had to do something to refocus after that so I posted a few favorite photos from last month's Cali excursion to my photo tumblr. Got kind of scattered, downloaded a freebie from iTunes/Starbucks I've been carrying around for a week or so (Soundgarden, Halfway There, I like it and I'm pretty sure that's not just because I live in the Pac NW), and now I'm trying to get the redesigned allegedly easier-to-use version of iTunes to do all the things it used to do for me easily. I'll crack that damn nut eventually.

By the way! If you're new here, hello! I have a tag called introductions are in order. I'm really not the best at tagging my posts, but I do try to remember to do it. I'll write a new introductory post when it's not nearly bedtime, or when Jack Johnson finishes singing, whichever happens soonest.

Also: HAPPY BIRTHDAY, [livejournal.com profile] jules1278!!!!

Hey people. (Please do not take my current music as an affront! the song is bouncy as hell!)

I'm feeling the urge to write some BSG fanfiction. Can you prompt me? Give me:

- a character (or characters)
- a setting (canon, pre-canon, post-canon, whatever)
- a theme. It can be as little as one word or an idea you'd like to see me run with.

For example: Laura/Bill, the day after the groundbreaking ceremony, "what to do about those munchies."

Guh, I shouldn't give examples (I'm looking at you, [personal profile] batyatoon, but actually I really like how that Jake the Dog story turned out!). Please, help a girl out and I'll do my best to write something just up your alley.

For Batya

[livejournal.com profile] batyatoon asked me for a Battlestar Galactica fic: Five times someone petted / fed / played with Jake the Dog on New Caprica (before or during the Cylon occupation), and what they were thinking at the time. I've been turning over the possibilities in my brain since she left the prompt. Here goes.

This has been a tough, tough month, but I managed to write some things.

- a Hell on Wheels drabble. >> (LJ)

- a Kara Thrace (Battlestar Galactica) story from a prompt from [livejournal.com profile] ceitfianna. Spoilers through 3x13 (Taking A Break From All Your Worries). >> (LJ)
- a Sirius Black (Harry Potter) story from a prompt from [livejournal.com profile] misslucyjane >> (LJ)
- a pre-canon Sam Anders (Battlestar Galactica) story from a prompt from [personal profile] silveraspen. >> (DW)
- a fairy tale as told by Howell Jenkins (Howl's Moving Castle) from a prompt from [personal profile] vivien. Spoilers for Howl's Moving Castle. >> (DW)
This prompt post is still wide open (DW | LJ). I would love to write something for you.

- a Sam Anders (Battlestar Galactica) story as a gift for [personal profile] lostinapapercup. Full series spoilers. >> (DW | LJ)

I've been watching lots of what I think is pretty damn good TV lately. Between Hell on Wheels (yeah, yeah, I know, it's slow and moody, so sue me) and Breaking Bad (yeah, this season's been over for a while, one more starting this summer) and Homeland (which I just started, I'm new at it, don't spoil me please) I've been getting my drama quotient filled.

But Battlestar Galactica is still my favorite. Why? Glad you asked [spoilers, naturally]. )
in_the_blue: (first time for everything)
So for [livejournal.com profile] ineedmyfics I wrote Lullabies for [livejournal.com profile] silveraspen. It's a Battlestar Galactica fic featuring a cast of thousands (or at least a cast of nine): Mr. Hoshi & Mr. Gaeta, Sam and Kara, Bill and Laura, and the Fighting Agathons + one who never stays put. I... uh... should say it contains full-series spoilers, too. But you should read it anyway.

And while you're reading BSG fic, you should also read Echoes, the gorgeous story I got from [livejournal.com profile] lostinapapercup. It also contains full-series spoilers. I'm so thrilled by it I can hardly even begin to express my appreciation.

50 things I love about Battlestar Galactica, in no particular order. )

(If you already saw it on Tumblr, my apologies for the repetition.)

In other news, I have a few things brewing, but I'll save them for a time when I'm not spamming you with pictures.

New Sam Anders story at the AO3. Pre-canon, no series spoilers.

As you were.

I have no set agenda to post here every day or anything but look! I'm on track for that. Oh, 2011, you will be a better year, if only in a way that four is a more resonant number for me than three. Numerologically speaking I'm a six (as opposed to a Six) and that means... well... about sixes )

Anyway, I got sidetracked. I didn't intend to post about numerology (hello, Gemini ascendant in all your perfectly justifiable easily-distracted glory)! What I intended to say was wow, I've gone all year without really talking about roleplay, how sad is that? It's certainly something to be rectified and guess what? This is probably only of real interest to [livejournal.com profile] batyatoon and [livejournal.com profile] silveraspen, and I'm really not into going around saying read my stuff, read my stuff, but Paige and I are working on a Kara/Sam thread from the end of No Exit (ouch, I know, I know) and I thought the two of you might be interested. There are significant spoilers for anyone who hasn't seen the whole show, so be forewarned! I'm enough of a RP ho that I will gladly point you to other non-spoiler-filled (and finished!) threads if you're that interested.
in_the_blue: (guess who's coming to dinner?)
What? It's a brand new year and I haven't mentioned Battlestar Galactica yet? The fuck frak is wrong with me?

Back at the beginning of last month I mentioned that my dear husband and I had started watching BSG together, finally. My goal was to finish by the end of holiday vacation, and I'm pleased to announce to the ENTIRE FRAKKING WORLD that we not only finished watching the series last night, but tonight we put the cap in nightcap by watching The Plan. Bonus features and deleted scenes and any webisodes aside, we've seen what there is to see and I'm delighted to report that he has the good taste to have thoroughly appreciated the series. Now everywhere we go, he gets to tell me which people he thinks are Cylons and why.

YES WE ARE LATE TO THE PARTY AS A COUPLE, SO WHAT.

This is great, because it's not often that we get to share fannish obsessions. He's all serious businessman, my sweetheart. I guess that's what happens when you're an exec, a CTO, a VIP, and a corporate superstar all rolled into one. But when we do get to share fannish obsessions, it's so much fun.

Speaking of sharing fannish obsessions, one night during vacation he was channel surfing because that's what men do, and he actually stopped on Cowboy Bebop and watched the whole episode. Here in this house of HI STEVE BLUM I LOVE YOU, BUT ONLY IN A WAY THAT SHOULDN'T MAKE HUSBANDS JEALOUS, he's showed outrageous patience with my love of all things Bebop. We have Spike overlooking our dining table and Vicious/Spike/Julia keeping tracks of the guests in our guest bedroom, and my anime drawer is full of many different collections of Bebop and the movie, and Edward Wong Hau Pepelu Tivrusky IV is the mascot in our terrarium. In fact, he's such a great supporter of my love for the show that he went with me to MechaCon in 2008, all the way to Lafayette, Louisiana, just so I could indulge myself. And we might go back this year for our own reasons, but not to Lafayette. The convention has moved to New Orleans proper. YEAH. I love that city.

OK. I had too much coffee after the memorial service. Tomorrow morning is going to hate me. Yet, I find I cannot sleep / alas / might I extend vacation for another week?

To recap, my favorite obsessions for 2010 in no particular order: Cowboy Bebop. Battlestar Galactica. Last Exile. Baccano! Dragon Age: Origins. Jeff Buckley. RPF-Figure Skating! (Just kidding on that one.) RPing. Writing. Talking characterization when I should be asleep.

Speaking of that, going now. Goodnight, world!
in_the_blue: (sam and kara)
Hooray for me! I finally got my sweetheart (whom some of you know by his beloved nickname -- the International Man of Mystery -- because of all his business travel) to start watching Batllestar Galactica with me. I know it's his kind of show and I've known it from the start, but he was being oddly stubborn... until one day when he was flying back from... oh, somewhere on the east coast and ran into one of his friends from a different company on the plane, and they sat together because it's a small world, and his friend who we'll call Chip because that's his name said "you'll like Battlestar Galactica."

Well, YES. So one night, due to lack of both Patriots and Celtics games, I said hey. Watch the BSG miniseries with me and he said "...okay." Mostly because he was lying down and I had the TV controller and was in complete control. So we watched 2/3 of it before he asked if we could wait and watch the end the next day because horizontal=tired, so cheerfully, I paused on Leoben sweating miserably in that really sad outfit and said "sure, honey!"

Much to my surprise, he asked the next day to watch more, and I laughed out loud at his reaction to the end of the miniseries. Those of you who've seen it might laugh along too, but at the very end, with the big reveal, this was his reaction:

"Bummer."

(I love him.)

So now we've made it to the end of Season One, and when he gets back from this latest travel we can watch more. He's already at the point where he looks with suspicion at anyone new and accuses them of being a Cylon, which amuses me endlessly. And at the end of Kobol's Last Gleaming, he turned to me perfectly straight-faced and said logically (because he's a Capricorn and they are born of logic): "See, that's the problem. You just can't trust a Cylon."

(I love him even more.)

Randomly, he'll turn to me and say how good he thinks the show is, and how well done, and how much he likes the visual FX, and I can only smile mysteriously like a Mysterious Girl* and nod and agree and secretly thank Chip for nudging him in the right direction.

Alllllllll of this leads inevitably to roleplay, like you weren't aware of that. Excuse me, I have a BSG character in my list of characters I play, in case you didn't know! For reasons I can't fully explain and haven't fully parsed yet, Starbuck and I -- I mean, Starbuck and Sam -- no, wait, I mean, [livejournal.com profile] lostinapapercup and I (there, that's better) -- decided to try out our two from their first canon meeting, but we ended up doing this whole fill-in-the-blanks behind-the-scenes thing that ended up covering both Resistance and The Farm, with help from backstory seen in The Plan. I got lost along the way, like... I fell into characterization and couldn't get out. Almost everything else went completely to pot (not literally, although at times I wished, haha) for the duration, except for my forays into Sawyer who's nothing like Sam.

So yeah, that was fun, and I'm so very excited for my sweetheart to get back and watch more with me. Soon we'll be caught up to what we just covered in RP and I'll be curious about his reaction to those two episodes. So far, he gives the series two thumbs way up.

I knew he was smart. That's one reason I married him.

*Bonus points if you get the reference! Even more bonus points if you get it and you're not [livejournal.com profile] alienchrist!!!

The past few days, all my focus has been going to this dumb TV show that ended a year ago already, and I didn't even start watching it until it was already over, but luckily for me that means I got to watch it all as fast as I could stand. Battlestar Galactica is not for everyone: those who like shows with lots of formulaic drama and happy endings are bound to be dissatisfied. I'm sure most of you who are going to watch it have already done so, but I'm going to give you five words that define BSG for me.

1. Relentless )

2. Seductive )

3. Creative )

4. Familiar )

5. Beautiful )

There. Now that I've waxed poetic about BSG, I can talk about how that translates to RP.

Roleplay, with BSG spoilers )
