I get the best ones when I'm awake in the middle of the night. Wait, is 4:30 the middle of the night?

1. So many "we're going to purge your journal because you haven't logged in for 2 years and have less than 3 posts" emails from LJ. It got me all nostalgic for those good old RP days when I couldn't wait to check my email to see who my character of the moment would be interacting with.

That was fun. I could never do it at that same frenetic pace again, though. But yeah, it was fun.

2. Dragon Age: Inquisition. I'm some 33 hours into my second play-through. I went female human mage this time. She's pretty kickass. I liked my Lavellan Inquisitor too, though. He was great. This time I imported from the Keep (for all of Origins, Awakenings, & DA2). My girl Hawke romanced Anders and kept him around even after his big misdeed. Last night in Inquisition I got some really beautiful dialog about that.

At 4:30 in the morning I had a formula all worked out for it. If I remember, it went something like:

if DA:2(Romanced!Anders)+(StillAlive)
   then DA:I(my!heart!broken)
   then PlayerNostalgia=active

That's my brain telling me to replay DA2 now that I have a sweeping view of the whole storyline.

Also, I'm reading the comic books. Alistair + Isabela + Varric = Happy Me.

3. NaNoWriMo is going. It only took me a few weeks, but I'm finally picking up steam with my writing. I wasn't sure that was going to happen. I'm glad it has/is.

4. I'm not doing holiday cards this year.

That's about it. Be well, y'all.

It's been quiet here.

A little too quiet. I'm starting to accept that the age of online journaling is a thing of the past, or will be soon. Then I ask myself: am I enough in love with it to be a champion for its continued use? I don't know.

Since I got back after my dad's memorial (which was wonderful - he would've approved), I've been catching up on life and playing Dragon Age: Inquisition (I just got all the dlc, spent more on that than on the game itself which was SO worth it). Question of the day: Have I been too engrossed in it? I saw a pile of eucalyptus bark beneath a tree today and thought "AHA! DEATHROOT! I should stop and harvest it."

Tomorrow I have an all-day workshop for Society for Children's Book Writers & Editors, which I hope will be as good as the last one I attended. Otherwise, I've been checking in on my mother-in-law every day and doing the usual expected & unexpected shit.

Hope all of you are well. Talk to me.

Following up on my last post, it's reveal time! For [community profile] ineedmyfics I went old-school and wrote...

Boom Boom Boom (3217 words) by r_lee
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Battlestar Galactica (2003)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Galen Tyrol/Sharon "Boomer" Valerii
Characters: Sharon "Boomer" Valerii, Galen Tyrol, Kara Thrace, Karl Agathon
Additional Tags: Pre-Canon
Summary: One of these days, Boomer would stick the landing.

One of these days.

I also wrote a treat:

The Monster (1009 words) by r_lee
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Divergent Series - Veronica Roth
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Caleb Prior
Summary: "Anger is the enemy of non-violence and pride is a monster that swallows it up." - Mahatma Gandhi

A Caleb Prior character study.

That was fun. If you read, let me know. I've spent a lot of time recently feeling like I can't write fanfic well any more, but I think these came out okay.

For at least 3 years I've been asking for a Hunger Games fic featuring Cinna, and I finally got a beautiful one for [community profile] ineedmyfics.

Stardom and Secrecy (1432 words) by JK Ashavah
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Hunger Games Trilogy - Suzanne Collins
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Cinna (Hunger Games), Capitol Citizens (Hunger Games)
Additional Tags: Minor Original Character(s)
Summary: In the Capitol, there are some questions you can't answer, no matter how much you want to. For Cinna, on Reaping Day, the question he's avoiding is why?

I hope you read it & enjoy it, and if you do, leave Jess a comment and tell her. It's a gorgeous fic.

If anyone feels like writing fanfic, we just opened up all the prompts for our fic exchange. You don't have to have signed up to participate, and there's no minimum length required. The collection goes live on September 21 at 9pm EDT.

Fandoms requested in sneakily alphabetical order )

All you need is an AO3 account. I can't imagine anyone reading this who doesn't have one yet, but if you don't and want one, hit me up for it.

Because I'm not juggling enough shit, I decided to enter Pitch Wars. Part of that, apparently, is posting my bio in a place where the mentors can read it if they want to find out more about me. Because I agonized over this more than I've agonized over anything else lately, I'm sharing it.

If you want to take a look, it's over on my Wordpress blog. Let me know if you have any questions or comments...or if it makes you more (or less) interested in reading the book.

Unrelated, I spent last night doing a bunch of "Which Game of Thrones Character Are You?" quizzes. Usually I get Dany or Jon Snow. Last night I was Arya more often than not. Now where did I hide Needle again?

I got to wax a little bit poetic about JK Rowling & Harry Potter over in Adventures in YA Publishing today. That was a lot of fun.

In case you didn't know, I got my start in fanfiction in the Harry Potter world, and went on to fame and fortune as a beta reader and staff member at the now-defunct Sugar Quill, where I had the (now-embarrassing) screen name Lady Narcissa. I didn't know any better at the time! We had some fun there, though, especially on roleplaying days. I could use all the lingo and say it was siriusly fun (Sirius was my first-ever RP character! Talk about a challenge!), and fess up that it was me behind the Sirius character at the Quill. I was also Lucius Malfoy there, and a few other characters on RP days. I sure don't remember them all now! James. Bill Weasley. More, I don't know who all! Sirius always got mobbed. I remember a 48-hour period where I didn't even see my family, I was so busy with Sirius's responsibilities at Grimmauld Place. Phew.

That was a long time ago. Don't tell anyone that these days I can barely tell the difference between Expelliarmus and Alohomora, okay? Thanks. Must be time for a re-read!
in_the_blue: (huh?)
Jon Snow is fighting Mr. Eko while Sam Adama looks on and Jack Bauer struts around like an asshole.

(I'm watching Pompeii, for no good reason.)

Only 2 more days for signups for I Need My Fics. Details at AO3.
in_the_blue: (judy judy judy)
They're live! Signups will be open until July 12 at 9PM Eastern. I hope some of you join in the fun.

I can't imagine anyone reading this will need an AO3 invite, but I have some if you'd like one, just let me know.

Cheers! We have some great fandoms on our list. I'm excited for this exchange!

...we all three went to see Brian Setzer play at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga. I don't even want to tell you how long it's been since I last saw him play, but it's been a long time. When I saw he was touring & doing rockabilly again, I knew I had to go. I love the BSO a lot, but I love this even more.

He played with 3 guys from the Orchestra - a stand-up bass, drums, and keyboardist/guitarist. They were SO good. They were opening for George Thorogood & the Destroyers. When they started, the seats were maybe half full, and that's being generous. The sun was still out, people were filing in, and I was in my seat being the happiest little clam of a fangirl anyone can imagine.

The set list went like this: )

Also, a few photos. )

For an opening act, they got to play a nice long set, and they got a 2-song encore. His guitar playing is insanely good.

We didn't even stay for George Thorogood, because I figured he couldn't top what we'd just seen.

Hey!

Politely nicked from [livejournal.com profile] scribble_myname:

Fic/shipping meme

1. Write down the names of 10 characters.
2. Get prompts from people using numbers instead of names.
3. Write a fic of fifteen words or less for every prompt, using the characters determined by the numbers.
4. Author, DO NOT read the prompts before you choose your characters

Please, everyone, steer me away from my critiquing. I've got my list of characters ready to go, and not a single one of my usual suspects are on it. Help a girl out.

Cleaning up my online spaces. I deleted mostundisciplined (my art tumblr) and jb's tumblr. Neither of these deletions happened on a whim; I've been thinking about this for a long time now. You probably know how much I can't stand tumblr in general, so I think my main tumblr is next to go. I never check it, I don't miss it, and using the site in general makes me anxious. Not to mention how the whole user interface has been dumbed down. Tumblr makes me too unhappy.

So that's that. Too many blogs in too many places.

Yup, [personal profile] lostinapapercup and I are running I Need My Fics again this year. The schedule's here. Hope some of you out there are in the mood for YAFE (Yet Another Fic Exchange).

[livejournal.com profile] scribble_myname tagged me for this meme, so what the hell, why not! It goes like this:

Pull seven lines from the seventh page of your WIP, then you're supposed to tag seven other writers.

My moral dilemma is always this: do I go with my double-spaced manuscript to get to the 7th page, or single-space it to see what happens?

7 lines from the double-spaced version:

Without saying a word she hands me her coffee in its to-go cup. It’s sweet of her but I wave it off. I’m not a white chocolate mocha type of guy and for all the time we’ve spent together on this tour, I’m sure that’s exactly what she’s drinking this time of day.

"What," she says, laughter filling in the rough edges of her accusation, "are you afraid caffeine might actually make you string a few words together?"

"Guilty," I tell her, trying hard not to smile. This is the same dance we’ve been doing the past few months. A step forward, two steps back.

7 lines from the single-spaced version (so I'm cheating, too bad):

"Sound diffusion."

The corner of Jesse’s mouth curves up in a smile. "You really are a complete fucking geek." Before I can protest, she adds one more thing. "I like that about you."

I try not to smile too hard, but there’s nothing about that effort that isn’t a losing proposition. Lucky for my self esteem, she doesn’t say a word about it.

I don't even know who to tag, who's writing these days? Um... [personal profile] ceitfianna, [personal profile] misslucyjane, [personal profile] thewickedlady, and anyone else who's writing and wants to show off their work!

So, my kid and I saw Mad Max: Fury Road (in 3D!) today.

my thoughts )

(In unrelated news, I have tickets to see Brian Setzer in June.)

ALSO: Writing more, based on the first feedback from one of my beta readers because I agreed with her comments wholeheartedly.

Gotta say, 3 days in Boston wasn't enough. If I'd been traveling by myself I would've done the trip so differently (like... tried to see YOU BOSTON PEOPLE and everything). But I was with my family, and we... blew into town saw the Red Sox went to the Aquarium had dinner with my oldest dearest friend went to Stellwagen Bank and saw lots of humpback whales saw Shear Madness walked back from the theater district to the wharf drove to Cambridge so my kid could see what Harvard is like had Dunkin Donuts drove to Connecticut saw family had the hotel pool to myself drove to Newark flew home. Last night I finally gave up trying to sleep at 3:30 or 4, and just stayed awake. I figured I would sleep all the way from Newark to San Francisco but didn't.

What is this asshattery.

We had such a fun time, though. Now I'm going to sleep the rest of the weekend... I hope.

Oh Hi
